Colorado Marathon - May 3, 2009

Years ago, a friend and I decided we needed to sign up for a race of some sort to encourage us to get serious about getting into shape. So we signed up for our first Bolder Boulder - a 10km on Memorial Day, along with 40,000+ other folks. And we did it. And we did it again the next year, and the year after that. Until one of us decided to be a river guide on the weekends. Last year, we did the Bolder Boulder again, and it felt great.

The trouble with doing the same race/distance for years is that now we know (because we've done it) that we can do the Bolder Boulder with minimal prep and still finish it. So this year, we've picked a much loftier goal. Last week we both mailed in our registrations for the Colorado Marathon's 1/2 marathon. 13.1 miles. It's happening May 3rd. The course is nearly all downhill, starting in the gorgeous Cache La Poudre Canyon, and finishing in Old Town Fort Collins.

I've been doing much better about getting to the gym and really putting in the time and miles in the past few weeks. The time limit for the half marathon is 5 hours - which mathematically means that even averaging a 22 minute miles we would finish. 22 minutes seems like an awful long time to do one mile - I'm just getting back into working out again and I'm in the 13-15 minute mile range, depending on the day. So I have no doubt we'll finish - even if we walk the entire way.

I also have no doubt it will be difficult, and I'll probably be terrified the week before about it, but when all is said and done, it's possible that the roughest part of the day will be getting to Fort Collins by 5:00 AM to get on the bus and ride up the canyon to the starting line.
